First Grade News
We have begun the year in superhero fashion! You may have heard that the first graders have been given special superhero capes and masks. They even have special superhero names which means they are officially superheroes!
It has been a “super” beginning for us. The students got rid of their first day jitters by drinking some jitter juice. Most of the students loved it and asked for seconds. Their desks are filled with lots of workbooks which will be used every day. They are learning to “listen” to directions and follow our routines. The students have already been earning a little bit of money for answering challenging questions because we practice Classroom Economy.
We completed a reading assessment and the superheroes did a “super” job. They are definitely ready for their homework baggies. However, the homework baggies will NOT be sent home this coming Monday. For the first week, they will be kept in the classroom and I will explain the homework assignment each day. Then the students will complete it during the school day. This way, they will know exactly what my expectations are for homework - done neatly and completely. So, you are off the hook this week for the most part. You will find, however, this week’s high frequency words in the green folder on Monday so you can practice these words with your child. I am also sending home three decodable readers which should be read each night. These may be too easy for those who already know how to read, so if that is the case, please have your child read one of his/her own books. Keep these books home. More explanation about the baggies will be given at our Back to School Night next Wednesday.
I will be teaching gym class for the time being on Thursdays because we do not have any specials on that day. This may change if or when we find a gym teacher; but for now, students should wear their gym clothes on Thursdays.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you on Wednesday evening, September 15th at 6:30, for our Back to School Information Night. It will begin in the church hall and then we will proceed to the first grade classroom.
I have posted a few pictures of your superheroes on Twitter. My hashtag is @MelinoLou. I will also have them posted on my website when I update it over the weekend.
I just know this is going to be a “super” year! Let’s ask God to keep us healthy and safe.
We will be going to Praise and Worship on Monday, so please join us if you are able. We will also celebrate Calvin’s birthday on Monday during snacktime.
Please keep those who lost their lives on 9/11 twenty years ago in your prayers. You may want to have your child write a prayer for these souls and add it to the prayer box which should have been placed beside his/her bed.
