LOU ANN MELINO - FIRST GRADE TEACHER
About Me:
I grew up in Somerville, the oldest of five children. I attended Catholic school through high school, where I met my husband of 48 years. We settled in Wakefield in 1980 and raised our three children. They graduated from Saint Joseph School many years ago. Our family expanded over the years to now include two sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law and eight grandchildren. Four of my grandchildren are students in this great school. The oldest is a seventh grader! We also have a dog, Teddy, who loves to go for walks around the neighborhood.
Spending time with my family, especially on Sundays when we have dinner together, is my favorite past time. I also love to read. My favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird. I am an avid Boston sports fan and enjoy watching the Patriots, even though Tom Brady is no longer with them. I did get to see him work his magic at one of their play-off games at Gillette Stadium on one of the coldest days of the year. In the warmer weather, I especially enjoy walking around the lake while listening to my favorite tunes.
Education:
I graduated from Salem State with a degree in Elementary Education and taught second grade in Somerville for five years. After I had my first child I decided to take time off from teaching to be a stay at home mom. When my youngest was in school full time, I returned to the classroom.
I taught language arts and reading to Middle School students in Somerville for the next seven years while pursuing a Master's degree in School Administration from Emmanuel College. After receiving my degree, I served as principal in various Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of Boston for twelve years.
Then God's plan led me back to Saint Joseph School. I found my true passion - returning to the classroom and being with children each day. What a gift it has been to teach first grade for the past ten years! It certainly helps to keep me young!
Why I love working at SJS:
I love Saint Joseph School because of its friendly, family-type atmosphere. My first floor colleagues are very supportive and we work well together. The parents are always ready to help, but the students are the BEST part of why this school is so special!
