First Grade News
9/5/25
You may have heard that your children have been given superhero capes and masks on the very first day of school. They even have special superhero names which means they are officially superheroes!
It has been a “super” beginning for us. The students got rid of their first day jitters by drinking some jitter juice after I read The First Day Jitters. Most of the students loved it and asked for seconds. Their desks are filled with lots of workbooks which will be used every day. They are learning to “listen” to directions and follow our routines. The students have already begun earning a little bit of money by answering challenging questions and exhibiting good behavior because we practice Classroom Economy.
We completed some super start assessments and the superheroes did a “super” job. They are definitely ready for some homework. Homework will be sent home each day in a homework baggy and should be completed that same evening and returned the next day in the homework baggy. I will also include some information about the phoneme (letter sound) of the week with the homework on Mondays which we will focus on throughout the week. We will be spending time practicing the sounds that make up each particular word and then do some substitutions using other letter sounds. I will also send home some decodable readers which should be read each night. These may be too easy for those who already know how to read, so, if that is the case, please have your child read one of his/her own books. Keep these decodable books home. More explanation about homework will be given at our Back to School Night next Thursday.
I am very impressed with the paper bag puppets and can’t wait to hear the students’ presentations about the character they created. We will have more time next week for the students to talk about their puppets.
Gym class begins on Wednesday. Please have your child dressed in the gym uniform and sneakers every Wednesday.
On Thursday evening, September 11th at 6:00, we will hold our Back to School Information Night beginning in the church hall and then we’ll proceed to the classroom so you can learn about what will happen in first grade. I will hold a second presentation at 7:30 for those who can not come to the first session.
I just know this is going to be a “super” year! Let’s ask God to keep us healthy and safe.
We will be going to Praise and Worship on Monday, so please join us if you are able.
Enjoy the weekend.
