First Grade Weekly News
Sept. 27, 2024
It has been another busy week for the superheroes. We learned lots about apples and Johnny Appleseed. We made 3-D apple booklets and Johnny Appleseed glyphs. Yesterday, our classroom smelled delightful because I made crockpot applesauce. This activity allowed me the opportunity to explain fractions while we followed the recipe. We enjoyed adding the applesauce as a topping to vanilla ice cream.
We finished the third story in Wonders and were assessed in comprehension, along with being able to identify the L blend phonemes. Students also took the word study assessment by spelling words that have the L Blend. You may have noticed that there is not a formal spelling list of words that needs to be memorized. This year, my hope is that students will be able to spell a variety of words using their knowledge of the phoneme that we worked on throughout the week. They do, however, need to practice the heart words, focusing on the heart part, so they know how to spell them. We also began using editing marks to correct sentence errors.
The students were tested on Chapter 1 in math today. They should be familiar with the terms “fewer” and sum. We will start to memorize the doubles facts as we continue Chapter 2.
Chloe was our superstar student of the week. Red is her favorite color and her sidekicks are Lexi and her grandmother. She would like to help everyone so the world will be a better place. We loved all her princess dolls! Next week, Stephen will be our superstar student.
October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary. Mary, our Mother, has asked that we pray the rosary each day. Please send in rosary beads with your child if you have them. They will keep them in their desk and use them each day as we pray a decade during morning prayer.
Scholastic book orders will be processed over this weekend, so if you want to place an order, please do so before Sunday.
The students will take the MAPS assessment on Tuesday and Thursday mornings next week. Please get them to bed early (Shannon, I know you will!) on Monday and Wednesday evenings next week. Make sure they also eat a nourishing breakfast the morning of testing.
Thank you to the many parents who volunteered to help chaperone our field trip. I randomly picked four calling sticks, so…here are the lucky four - Mary Lynch-Lent, Erin Hickey-Reardon, Michaela Cappuccio, and Shannon Santiago. I will turn a blind eye if anyone else wants to meet us at the farm…shhh!!! We did have some tears)=:
Have a great weekend!
