We had another very productive week in Grade 1 even though it was a four day week.  Monday was a beautiful tribute to Dr. Sullivan as we gathered together to celebrate his new life.  We were so blessed to have had him in our lives.

This week we created an Indian corn mosaic and learned a poem about what its colors represent.  They are decorating our bulletin board outside our classroom.

We’ve finished the second story of Unit 2 in our reading series and the students were tested on it today.  This week we focused on the short u phoneme in spelling.  I am anticipating a better outcome on this week’s assessment because there should be no guessing on the short u sound.  Last week was tough…both e and ea have the same sound, so it was difficult to spell some of the words.  Because there is no formal spelling list for students to memorize, it will be helpful to look over the phonics pages that come home in the green folder each day.  You will find many of the words on those worksheets.  You will also find the heart words which need to be spelled correctly, as well.

The students took the Chapter 3 math assessment today.  If your child did not get 100%, he/ she will retake it on Monday.  Keep practicing math facts so they do not have to rely on their fingers when adding or subtracting.

Mila was our star student this week, and presented to us a beautiful poster about herself.  Her favorite color is pink and she would get rid of all the plastic in order to make the world a better place.  We loved all her stuffed animals!  Next week, Sayu will be our superstar student of the week.

The first marking term ended today.  Report cards will be distributed on Friday, Nov. 15th.  This is also a Casual For a Cause Day.  Blue is the color and students should bring in $1.00 which will be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul society.

The craft fair is quickly approaching.  Don’t forget to send in your raffle tickets!

Scholastic Book orders can be placed online using my classroom code - NDQW3.

Let us remember and thank our veterans as we enjoy the long weekend.
