First Grade News
11/15/24
We had another busy four day week. Sometimes, these are the longest days, especially while getting report cards ready for prime time!
We began working on Chapter 4 in math, reinforcing doubles facts while learning strategies for the doubles +1 and -1, as well as adding 3 digits. We will now begin to memorize the +2 addition facts.
We finished the third story in our reading series. This week we focused on ending blends, plural possessives, and adding “ing” to verbs. Just so you know, I read most of the test out loud along with the questions and the answers, one by one. Then the students choose the answer to that particular question as we go along. Please go over any questions your child might have answered incorrectly when these tests go home.
Sayu was our Student of the Week. We loved seeing the 22-23 Super Bear that belongs to her brother. Samanyu was our spelling bee winner when he was in first grade. She loves the colors pink and purple and if she could make the world a better place she would help people learn about God. Vittoria will be our star student next week.
Report cards were distributed today. You will notice the text level for reading on the report card. This refers to our second book of the six units in Wonders, so everyone is on text level 1.2. I have not yet performed a running record in reading on any of the students because many are still at the beginning level. By the end of first grade, the expectation is that a student should be able to read at least 60 words per minute with accuracy. There are a few that are already at that level or far beyond. I am seeing improvement with fluency in just about every student. By having your child read aloud at home every day, it will become even better. Please sign and return the report cards by next Wednesday. A conference sign-up sheet will be sent home on Monday. Please choose 3 time slots and I will try to honor your choices. The conferences will be held on Thursday evening, Dec. 5th and Friday afternoon, Dec. 6th.

The students will shop with the help of their buddies next Friday morning for gently used religious items at the craft fair. These items will be beautiful Christmas presents for the family. We will keep them in school and wrap them so they can be put under the Christmas tree closer to Christmas. Please do not send any more than $20 with your child. You should put it in an envelope with your child’s name on it. One dollar bills are needed if possible.
Kindergarten - Grade 3 will be having our annual Thanksgiving breakfast on Wednesday, Nov. 27th in the church hall. Our room moms will be asking for some help. If you’d like to help set up, please go to the church hall after drop off. Breakfast will consist of pancakes and sausages, corn bread, and water. There will be a $5.00 charge. If your child will not be here on that day, please let me know. We will be singing a song and reciting a poem.
Have a great weekend!
