First Grade News

Happy New Year! It seems like Christmas was so long ago. I loved the gift basket filled with all of my favorite things! I did share many of the items, just so you know. The students did an exceptional job this week transitioning back into our routine after the Christmas break.
We began our third unit in our reading program. This unit focuses on the long vowel sounds. Students will receive a reading journal on Monday along with a chapter book to read at home each night. They should follow the template attached to the first page as they write in their journals. The journals should be turned in once a week so I can read them and make comments, then I will return them in their homework baggies so they don’t get lost.
We began Chapter 6 in math where students will learn about place value and counting by 10’s into the hundreds. I am attaching a letter on the back which explains how you may help your children with this concept. We are also reviewing how to tell time to the hour and half hour while trying to figure out the hour before and after.
Next week we will begin to learn about penguins. If your child has a stuffed penguin, it may be brought in as we build a colony of penguins in our classroom.
The superstar student will be Thomas next week. We will also begin our “Special Me” writing project where the students will write about each other’s special qualities which will then be compiled into a book with the student’s profile (from Polar Express) as its cover. This will be a nice keepsake for each student.
Special congratulations to the Cefalo family who welcomed baby Finn into their family during the Christmas break. Maeve is going to be the best big sister ever!
Try to stay healthy and warm as we continue to progress through the month of January. Let us continue to pray for those whose lives have been affected by the wild fires in California.
Have a good weekend!
