First Grade News

We had a very productive week. It must have been the delicious breakfast the students had to start the week off! Most loved the green eggs and ham as we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The muffins and bagels were also a big hit! Pictures are on my website.
We finished our second story of Unit 4 in our reading series this week. Our reading fluency is coming along nicely. We are learning how to find the main topic of our passages as well as how to identify the details to support it.
In math, we are working on Chapter 8, adding and subtracting by10’s. Most have a good understanding of this concept. They will be assessed next week. Please practice the addition and subtraction math facts up to 20 with your children. Many are still using fingers and number lines. This slows them down.
The students are very excited to make their own leprechaun traps and bring them into school next Thursday. We will set them up around our classroom before the end of the day and try to catch a pesky leprechaun on Sunday night. You do know that leprechauns come out the night before St. Patrick’s Day (Sunday) to create havoc. You do not have to make a trap, but if this is something you enjoy doing with your child, have fun, and then he/she can bring it in and we’ll see if we’re lucky enough to catch one!
Stella was our star student this week. She would like everyone in the world to show kindness to one another so it will be a better place to live. Her mom and sister are her superheroes. We loved all her special treasures, especially her Polly Pocket Care Bear toy. Next week, Brooke will be our student of the week.
Thank you to our Mystery Readers this week. Sayu’s uncle, Sidvi, a pre med student, surprised us as well as Mrs. Koutouvides on Tuesday afternoon, and Mrs. Reardon came in yesterday.
Our gym day will be held next Tuesday instead of Wednesday next week. Coach Lee has invited the students to wear crazy socks that day.
On Friday, March 14th, there is no school for teacher professional day. Enjoy the long weekend.
Casual for a Cause will be held on Monday, March 17th for the Type 1 Diabetes Foundation. Students may wear “green” for St. Patrick’s Day by donating $1.00.
This year there are eight first graders in the school play, Mary Poppins. The production will be performed on March 29th and 30th at the Galvin Middle School. Tickets will soon be on sale. I hope you will come and support them.
Have a good weekend. Don’t forget to spring ahead. I love that it will be staying lighter later, but I do not like losing an hour of sleep!
