First Grade Weekly News

What a busy week we had! The students took the MAPS assessments in reading and math which will help me address their areas of strength and weakness. They painted their guardian angels in art class and will finish them next week. The classroom store opened for business yesterday. The students had the opportunity to count up their earnings and buy an item in the store only after they paid me rent for their desks and chairs.
This week our phonics lessons focused on the short /o/ phoneme. We will continue this into next week. We also learned about exclamatory sentences and interjections. Wow! We read story #4, a nonfiction selection, in our Wonders reading program. We compared nonfiction to fiction stories. Students will be assessed on their comprehension skills on Monday. There will be no written homework next week. Just have your child read for 20 minutes.
In math, we continued with Chapter 2, learning how to turn an addition equation into a subtraction equation. We are also learning how to add and subtract one to a number using mental math. When adding doubles, we figured out that the sum can never be an odd number.
Stephen was our superstar of the week. He loves the color red. If he could change anything in the world, it would be to get rid of all the trash. We had fun listening and dancing to his favorite song, “We Will Rock You.” Next week, Aris will be our superstar student.
We are looking forward to our field trip to Brooksby Farm next Tuesday. Let’s pray for good weather. Don’t forget to pack a disposable bagged lunch. We will have an apple cider donut and cider for a snack. Students should wear their gym clothes.
Next Thursday afternoon, we will have our evacuation drill. Pick up for dismissal will be at the church at 2:10.
No school next Friday because of a Professional Development for teachers. No school on the following Monday for the holiday.
Have a super weekend! The weather looks like it may be a great time to go leaf peeping!
