First Grade News
12/06/24
There are many exciting things happening in First Grade as we prepare for Christmas! Our elf, Chip, is finally here. He was hanging out with the Blessed Mother on the first day. He brought Hershey kisses from Santa. On Wednesday he was hiding in one of our poinsettia plants. It took the students until lunchtime to find him. As you can imagine, our days start off in a lively way!
The students decorated Advent wreaths and hung them on the sides of their desks. Each week leading up to Christmas, they will color in a candle flame. We are also celebrating the season of Advent by decorating our Jesse tree with ornaments representing stories from the Old Testament that trace Jesus’s lineage.
After reading the story of Rudolph, the students wrote letters to Rudolph to express how sorry they were that he was bullied by the other reindeer because he was different. They also asked Rudolph to tell Santa about something special they hope to get for Christmas. You can check them out when you come in for conferences.
We will finish our fifth story of Unit 2 in our reading series on Monday. We focused on the digraphs ch, tch, ph, and wh. We also learned how to make nouns plural by adding es when the word ends in x, ch, or sh.
We finished Chapter 4 in math and the students were assessed. Students now know how to add 3 digits to find the sum. They also realized it’s easier if they can first find the combination of 2 numbers that add up to 10 because adding 10 to any number is easy.
We began to learn about the Christmas customs of countries around the world. We began with the country of Mexico which celebrates the birth of Christ by processing from door to door in search of a place for Mary and Joseph to rest for the night. This is called La Posada.
We will be attending Mass on Monday, December 9th at 9:00 for the Immaculate Conception holyday. No Praise and Worship! Class A uniforms!
Next Tuesday we will be wrapping our Christmas gifts with the help of our buddies. We’ll enjoy some hot chocolate and cookies with them, too. These will be sent home in the afternoon.
We will be practicing for the Nativity Pageant over the next couple of weeks. This will be held on Dec. 20th at 6:30 in the church. The first graders will be the villagers going to Bethlehem. If you have a plain colored robe, your child can dress in that. If not, please look for a robe-like garment in any color, other than white, for your child. They do have these on the “Oriental Trading” website for $9.99, but you would need to order them right away. On Amazon, I saw maroon ones, too.
A Casual for a Cause will be held on Friday, Dec.. 13th. Students may wear red/green and donate $1.00 for Toys For Tots.
I’m still working on a date for our Polar Express party. I’ll let you know when I finalize it.
Enjoy the weekend. Find some time in the “busyness” to spend some quiet time with the Lord as we continue our Advent season.
