First Grade News
4/17/25
This week we worked very hard to get five days of work completed in just four days! We even wrote a line poem entitled “OUCH!” I bet that’s exactly what your child said when the band-aids came off.
We finished Lesson 3 in our reading series which focused on the sound of “or, oar, and ore”. Students should now understand that “or” has 2 sounds - the sound it makes in “torn” and the sound it makes in “word”. I know, it’s so confusing. So, when your child is reading and comes upon an unfamiliar word that has an “or” in it, he/she should try both sounds and then hopefully, be able to figure out the word.
We began Chapter 11 in math which teaches the students how to interpret data using various graphs. Students seem to be grasping this with not many problems. I can’t stress enough the need to practice the addition and subtraction facts with your children. It’s going to get more difficult when adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.
We were not able to write about the “special me” student this week because a couple of students were not here, so we’ll continue this after break.
We were surprised by the Vanoni family (minus Mr. Vanoni) who were our Mystery Readers this week. Giovanni read “You Are Mine” and Caterina read a poem written by Emily Dickinson. Each student was then given a writing pad which can be used to write his/her own story or poem. Thank you for visiting!
Some students were given a reading for the First Friday liturgy which will be celebrated on May 2nd. Please practice this with your child over the break so they are very familiar with it when we return to school. All students will have a part in the Mass. Some will be greeters while others will be presenting the offertory gifts.
When we return from break, I will be giving each student a poem to memorize for our Poets’ Tea which we will have at the end of May. I will share more information soon about this fun, first grade activity.
Ms. Loraine and I wish you and your family many blessings as we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. Enjoy the break!
